Low carbon living enables you to understand how and where your highest carbon emissions are, be it in your daily work or home life, and we encourage you to make changes where feasible to reduce your carbon emissions which will help you make a saving. Many people do not recognise the unnecessary amount of resource we use because it is all easily accessible.
Please see some of our home tips below:
Heating
- Wear a few extra layers and switch the heating on a few hours later, can the thermostat settings be changed?
- Close your curtains to reduce heat escaping
- Insulation of cavity walls
- Reduce heat which is being lost through reviewing your windows - double glazing can reduce loss by up to 50%
- Draughts waste energy, seal up all areas which releases heat.
Air conditioning
It is easy to push a button, but assess the peak moment to use and then switch it off.
Electricity
- Does the light need to be on? Switch off all appliances and do not leave on standby if you are not using them.
- Washing machines and electrical dryers use a lot of energy, ensure full loads and try and keep wash load temperature down and air dry clothes.
- Take wall charger out of the wall as even when it is not charging it still uses energy
- Switch to energy saving light bulbs.
Water
- Is your water tank well insulated will save a lot of energy and money
- Dripping taps are annoying but if it is the hot water tap which is dripping it will cost you not only water costs but heating costs as well.
- Switch the tap off when brushing your teeth.
